Ottawa is the primary gateway to our most diverse travel
region. Gothic, cliff-top Parliament may be the city's
foremost attraction, but there is also a bounty of enjoyable
museums to enjoy, with subjects as diverse as money, nature,
technology and aviation. Ottawa's trail system makes the
city a preferred destination of skiers, bikers and walkers
while a skate on the canal is de rigeur every winter.
The scenic 200-kilometre Rideau Waterway connects Ottawa to
Kingston and the Rideau Heritage Route along the Waterway is
an excellent holiday by road or by water. Delightful
villages along the waterway offer historic museums,
limestone shopping districts and superb antique shops.
Venerable Kingston has much to offer the traveller. A
stately city hall, streets of perfectly preserved limestone
buildings and a massive stone fort provide a stunning
backdrop for world-class sailing and spectacular military
tattoos. Prince Edward County is a picture postcard region
of immaculate family farms and quiet lanes. Farm-gate
markets and art studios make for delightful exploration.
Hike the world's largest freshwater sand dunes or charter a
boat for scuba diving or salmon fishing. "The
County" celebrates its agricultural bounty through a
"Taste the County" program.
The Thousand Islands, an islet-studded stretch of blue St.
Lawrence River, has long been the haunt of the rich and
famous. Gananoque is the departure point for popular boat
cruises and for the delightful cycling and pleasure driving
available along a scenic parkway. Summer theatre in a
riverside canoe club, an opulent Edwardian mansion and
Ontario's greatest "pioneer village" are among the
region's many attractions.
Every village in Ontario's East is close to its wilderness
roots. Recommended outdoor experiences include whitewater
rafting, orchid viewing, exploring a sub-arctic bog, and
snowshoeing in Canadian Shield country.
